Teaching Staff



Myrna Koonce, MFA, Lead Teacher

Myrna has taught at HCNS since the nursery school began, and assumed  director duties in 2008.  She holds a Child Development Associate credential, a BA in English and Classics from Cornell University, and an MFA in Creative Writing from Vermont College of the Fine Arts.  Myrna was a Head Start teacher, center director and administrator before working at the Maine Humanities Council where she helped develop the "Born to Read" early literacy program. She also has served as an adjunct early childhood instructor at Central Maine Community College and Southern Maine Community College.  A lifelong singer and a writer, Myrna incorporates music, storytelling and drama into her work with children.  She has a grown son and daughter, and lives in Brunswick with her husband and three cats.

 









Margaret Northup, MS, Lead Teacher

Margaret Northup received her B.A. in Elementary Education from U Mass, Amherst and her M.Ed. in Child Development and Early Childhood Education from Wheelock College.  She has held a variety of positions in the early childhood field.  In the public school arena, she has taught first grade, kindergarten, and an inclusive special needs class for three to five-year-olds.  Margaret has also taught preschool for Head Start and Child Development Services.  Most recently, she worked as the coordinator/teacher in the Communication Garden program at the Maine Educational Center for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing where she focused on guiding children, ages three to five, with a range of hearing and communication skills to interact with one another. In addition, Margaret has served as an adjunct instructor in early childhood education at Southern Maine Community College. The mother of two grown sons, Margaret lives in Brunswick with her husband and her adopted cat.







Kate Miller
, Assistant Teacher


Kate holds a Bachelor's degree from Warren Wilson College and has taken Master's level courses in elementary education. This is her first year as a regular classroom teacher; however, she worked as a long-term substitute at HCNS last spring. Kate is interested in gardening with kids, and finding ways to share the beauty and wonder of the natural world with children.  She lives in Harpswell.








Debra Streadwick., Assistant Teacher

Debra grew up in Harpswell, and attended the University of New Hampshire, where she earned a Liberal Arts degree. She worked at the Child Development Center at the Brunswick Naval Air Station, serving as an Assistant Teacher and then a Lead Teacher with pre-schoolers and toddlers, and earning her early childhood credentials.  For 17 years, she lived in Montana, where she earned a Massage Certification and had a Massage Spa. Now she is back in Maine, and continuing her education in the early childhood field through Maine Roads to Quality. Debra lives in Cundy's Harbor with her teenage son and her parents, and has a grown daughter who still lives in Montana.
