ABOUT THE HARPSWELL COMMUNITY NURSERY  SCHOOL

The HCNS was founded in the fall of 2003 by Elizabeth Davis, who saw the need for a high quality, center-based preschool serving Harpswell children.  The school is licensed by the Maine Department of Human Services.  The Nursery School Committee, made up of the school director and representatives from Kellogg and the Harpswell community, manages the financial stability of the school.  The teachers and director plan the curriculum on a monthly basis.  Curriculum is based on children's emerging interests. While the staff teach children values of kindness, respect and service to others, the curriculum is not based in, nor does it adhere to, specific religious teachings.

PHILOSOPHY

We believe that positive early experiences form the foundattion for a healthy and productive life.  To that end, we strive to create opportunities for each child in our program to experience success, develop friendships, make new discoveries and master new skills.  Our aim is to provide educational experiences which will help establish each child's sense of confidence and enjoyment in learning.

MISSION STATEMENT

Harpswell Community Nursery School provides an excellent, self-supporting early childhood program as an outreach service from the Kellogg Church to the community.  The curriculum emphasizes learning through play, discovery and guided experience using the natural curiosity of childen as the most valuable tool for growth.  The daily use of high-quality children's literature creates a strong foundation for literacy.  The goal for each child is to become successful, socially aware and compassionate.
